I passed a stand of these lippy's at Priceline a few months ago when they first came out and though I'm not normally a fan of Revlon, I swatched one thinking that with the cheap looking packaging these will be crap. I'm not ashamed to admit I was wrong but at the time I couldn't justify buying another lipstick I really didn't need. Instead I made a mental note to keep an eye out for a sale and about a month later Chemist Warehouse had a 50% off all Revlon sale and these 4 came home with me.
Magnolia, Tulip, Primrose, Petunia
Revlon describes them as a wax-free gel formula for "true colour clarity without the heavy feel" and "vivid colour in one swipe". They glide on easily like a balm and feel very light and moisturising and they are super comfortable to wear so I agree with the first statement. Not so much the second though. I tend to wear them fairly sheerly for the most part but it takes quite a few swipes to build them up to their full colour which may or may not be opaque depending on the colour. In any case they look just as pretty patted on lightly as they do built up to their full colour and they have a lovely soft shine finish. They remind me of the effect you get from a MAC Lustre lipstick, somewhat glossy and semi-opaque. You do need to be careful though not to over-do applying it or it can grab onto itself and can get patchy which I think is where the creamy gel consistency works against itself. Also the formula is softer than the norm so the creamier colours show a more noticeable 'grab' on any dry patches on your lips so its best to go in with prepped lips before applying these. The wear time is average for this type of formula - anywhere from 1-4 hours depending on whether I'm eating/drinking or not. And lastly they have a strong fruity sweet fragrance which is quite noticeable on application but dissipates fairly quickly and have a sweet taste that reminds me of melon . I don't really notice the flavour but quite like the smell though I can see it being overpowering for some.
Magnolia, Tulip, Primrose, Petunia
Magnolia is a soft creamy nude with a slight apricot hue about it. My lips are still fairly pigmented (time is slowly bleeding the colour out of them) and this colour is lighter than my lips so can look quite patchy when built up. Even so it's a great neutral that I tend to grab quite often and dab on lightly as it is perfect for adding subtle polish to a more natural or minimal makeup look.
Tulip is a very pretty coral peach that leans orange on my lips with a good amount of pigment. I haven't gotten much use out of it yet but I'm really looking forward to wearing this brighter pop of colour in the coming months once this cold winter is finally done. The swatch above is a great example of how they can get patchy as they are built up.
Primrose is a lovely rosey mauve that is exactly the type I automatically gravitate towards so its no surprise its my most worn of the 4.
Petunia is a cooler pink red which looked much deeper when swatched instore. I find that this one is really pigmented and leaves a stain but doesn't wear that evenly and if I'm not careful I wind up with a pink ring around my mouth.
Since the formula limitations suits my style of wearing lipsticks, ie, subtly sheared out, on the whole I'm really happy with these with one major exception - I hate the packaging. Its so cheap looking and feeling with the clear plastic lid and the crude blunt cut of the bullet and as many before me have griped, the bullet doesn't wind all the way down so you either have to be extremely careful replacing the lid or put up with chunks and smears of lipstick inside the lid. And these retail for $23.95 in Australia so they're not inexpensive. As great as I think these are, as an overall product they're not worth paying full price for. But if I found them half off again I can see myself checking out some of the other shades because I really do like how these feel and I'll definitely be wearing the ones I have down to the nub which is more than I can say for a lot of my other lippys.
