Clockwise from top left: Wet'n'Wild Comfort Zone definer shade, NARS Malacca, Mac Club
I’m definitely not current with the latest releases from cosmetic brands so it’s no surprise I completely missed the release of the NARS Summer Collection for 2014 earlier this year which featured the single eyeshadow Malacca. But I kept coming across reviews that saw it described as ‘Club-like’ in its duality with less red and more brown than Mac Club so of course I had to check it out. Thankfully it’s a permanent shade.
NARS Malacca
NARS describes it as an ‘iridescent peacock’ and the image on the NARS website shows it as a sea-green with bits of purple shimmer. In the pan it looks more like a fine dark green shimmer with a brown undertone. Swatched it’s a gorgeous shimmery sea-green on a dark plummy grape background that sheers out to a soft grape, in fact the more it’s sheered out the more purple it becomes.
Many comparisons have been made to Mac Club or Wet ‘n’ Wild’s Comfort Zone definer shade but I find the differences far outweigh the similarities. While they all have that green sheen, Club and Comfort Zone’s undertones pull almost red which can be hard to pull off on some skin tones (read: bruised eye look) and I find I have to be careful when blending into the crease as on my hooded eyes all you can see when my eyes are open is a red smudge under my browbone. I tend to limit both these shades to just my eyelid and blend out with a matte mid brown like Mac Wedge.
On the other hand Malacca’s undertone is subtler and infinitely more wearable for me. While I don’t like a shimmery crease colour, this blends out with a very subtle sheen into a warm soft brown grape that looks elegant and understated and very wearable for an everyday look. And then when I look down you get a flash of almost liquid green on a chocolate background which when built up makes for a striking evening look. And it goes without saying that Malacca compliments brown eyes beautifully.
